For example the other day I saw how a dog had been labelled as a bully with other dogs. Her behaviour was completely different to nervous or protective dogs where she would leave them well alone.

Using animal communication it became very clear that her dog was desperate to be sociable with other dogs. The reason for the aggression was that she was afraid of the intimacy. Now it became clear why she was approaching the younger and gentle dogs. She was also very sensitive to other dogs feelings and this is why she did not want anything to do with nervous or protective dogs.

This feeling of wanting to be close, changed as soon as her nose got to close to another dogs. Replaced with this feeling of intense shyness and protection.

Ways To Keep Your Dog From Drowning

In North America it is estimated that there are currently 58 million dogs and 62 million cats. Unfortunately, every year thousands of these pets drown. Due to the fact that many people do not report these drownings, there is no way to know exactly how many pets actually die this way. Although, 99 % of dogs can swim, we have a false sense of security when we see our dogs running and jumping in and out of the water at the lake or our back yard pool. The reason for this is that most dogs (and a few cats) grow very tired after only swimming very short distances. When they are not able to find purchase anywhere with their paws, a debilitating panic sets in quickly, and this is what will cause them to drown. But it is more than just a problem for pets, for loving pet parents will selflessly and without hesitation dive into a frozen lake or rapidly flowing river in an attempt to rescue their animal.

What ways can we prevent our pets from drowning? Here are a few valuable tips:

1. Do not make the assumption that your dog is able to swim.

2. Keep a closer eye on a pet that is getting older. As they age, they are unable to swim as when they were younger.

3. Never throw a dog or cat in water. This will cause them to panic from the surprise.

4. Purchase a canine floatation device (CFD) or pet life jacket for your dog or cat. If they are going to be near water, put it on them. Often a pet may fall off a dock or out of a moving boat without our knowledge.

5. Solar blankets/pool covers look like a solid surfaces to a pet. If your animals are near the pool, it is a good idea to remove them when possible.

6. Put up a pet safety gate to impede a pet's access to the pool area.

7. Check to ensure that your pet does not have an entry into your neighbor's pool area.

8. A pool alarm is a good idea for your pool or pond.

9. Keep your pet away from rapidly flowing water.

10. Make sure your pet stays away from frozen lakes and rivers.

There is a ton of guilt that comes from having to watch your pet drown, and a person can never fully recover from having to go through that experience. You can get a cage in many different styles and made from various materials. You can find cages at your pet supply stores, hardware stores, or in the pet section of some department stores. When you purchase a cage for your pet, consider their needs and consider why you are buying the cage. If you travel, consider purchasing a cage made of plastic for your dog, as wire cages will not protect them from extremes of temperature. You should also think about the size of the cage. Buying a new create when he has outgrown the old one costs a lot of money. You can easily buy a large cage for your puppy to grow into and simple block off the area of the cage that the puppy does not need, so he/she can't go to that area to void.

Crate Training Puppies Made Easy

Crate training puppies makes all other puppy training steps much easier - it forms a good foundation. When you are crate training puppies you are also making sure that you establish yourself as the leader in your puppies eyes.

A puppy loves to feel secure, and he will certainly get security from having his own space. Any animal hates to soil his own area, so he will be very unlikely to mess or wet his crate - so long as you don't leave him in it for longer than his bladder can hold on.

When you buy your first crate, you need to ensure that you buy one that is the right size for your puppy. He needs to be able to stand up in it and be able to move around as well. I have gone for the metal crate that has a door opening at one side. This is nice and strong and my dog can see out of it easily.

To get your puppy used to the crate, put a small treat in there which he will go in and get. Do this quite a few times and praise him every time he goes into the crate.

When he is totally relaxed with this you need to move onto the next stage which is closing the door for a few seconds. So when his attention is on the treat, close the door whilst praising him quietly. No more than 20 seconds though. Let him out and give him a pat, no praise, just a little pat. Repeat this often and gradually increase the length of time the crate is closed. Don't do it for so long that he gets upset though.

Continue this for a few days, then gradually leave him in there when you are not in the room, but only for a few minutes - he will soon get used to being in there. When you go back into the room, don't make a fuss, simply walk over to him and open the crate. After about 3 days you will be able to leave him for an hour or so.

In no time at all your puppy will be totally used to going into his crate, and you will be able to leave him in there for upto an hour if you need to go out without him.

Over a period of three days or so you will be able to leave for an hour quite happily. As your dog gets a bit older you could leave him for slightly longer than this.

Don't ever make his crate into a prison or use it as a punishment, and do not take him out of his crate if he is crying or misbehaving - he will think this is what he has to do to be let out. At the time you open his door he must be being good. - 32401

How Agility Can Builds Confidence In Your Dog

Agility classes are a great place for people to learn about the sport and learn how to train, but the timid dog may take a long time before he is ready to venture from under your chair or off your lap.

A timid dog is only ready to learn from inside its comfort zone. So the best place for training is probably the home, where it feels safe and the learning can be done in small increments.

So, how do you train at home? You will need guidelines and equipment. There is a multitude of websites that can give you information on agility training. There are also books and videos that will give details and visual aids and lesson plans for beginners thru expert levels.

There is a variety of equipment that is useful and helpful to have at home. Equipment recommendations are based on your available space and location of training. Do you have a large yard that will hold 10 obstacles? Do you have a small yard where you will need setup equipment and then tear down before you can setup again? Will you be training in your garage or basement, or as some agility addicts, in your living room?

The equipment has to be safe and sturdy when training a timid dog. A good place to start your agility training is a pause table. A 12" high pause table (preferable with adjustable legs) is a great starting point for dogs in all sizes. Setup the table in an area that the dog is familiar with. If your dog is the type that barks at everything new, you can leave in the house or yard for a couple of days before using it. Then the dog can inspect and smell it. Remember you need to use baby steps with an insecure dog.

To encourage it to get up on the table you can use treats or its favorite toy. And remember it may well take several lesson. If it loses interest, you should try something new like placing yourself on the table. Then you can either hold it or have it on leash, while you are sitting on the table. But remember only to treat it when it comes against you. Never reward it, when it is pulling away.

When the dog gets more experienced, you might want the dog to jump on the table using a cue word like Table, stay on the table as you back away with the word Stay and Come to you, when you call. You should extend the distance slowly, not pushing the dog to hard.

Following the above instructions, you can slowly introduce new obstacles. When it is able to succeed new pieces of equipment, you will see its confidence grow. - 32401
